Kristian’s Stargate project

I have a made a “working” Stargate model from the SG1 TV-show. It spins, the chevrons move and lights up and when a correct address is dialled, the wormhole is established. The wormhole is an infinity mirror effect. The stargate is controlled with a DHD. You can check out the video presentation of the Stargate in action here:

I like 3d printing, electronics, programming and making stuff. I also enjoy the Stargate TV-series and decided to make a “working” model of the stargate as seen in the TV-show.

This was a challenging and fun project and I had to learn a lot of new stuff. This has been a very time-consuming project. There are a few variations of Stargates used in the show and I chose to make the original one from the SG1 series. There are also several logical “glitches” in the technical workings of the gate as seen in the TV show and it even behaves differently in different episodes. I have made it work as best I can while staying as true as possible to the feeling and essence of the TV-Show.

Features

  • A fully interactive working Stargate complete with a DHD (Dial Home Device).
  • The Stargate ring spins and places the dialled symbol on the correct chevron as the traveller is inputting the address by using the DHD.
  • All 7 chevrons move and lights up when engaged.
  • The Stargate can dial any milky-way address used in the show.
  • NEW: The stargate can now dial other stargates over the Internet, and receive incoming wormholes from other stargates on the Internet.
  • When a correct address is input using the DHD, the wormhole is established.
  • The wormhole effect consists of a animated infinity mirror of 122 LED’s.
  • Complete with sound effects from the TV Show.
  • When the wormhole stays open, selected random audio clips from the TV-Show is played.
  • As in the TV-Show the wormhole can stay open for 38 minutes. When the time limit is reached, a random quote from the show where the time limit is mentioned is played and the wormhole disengages.
  • Do not dial the black hole.
  • The Stargate itself is about 39 cm in diameter.

  1. good day. im planning to build this for my gf but i can see that it’s really time consuming, especially since I’m going to be starting from zero when it comes to electrical work. that said i still want to do it. my questions are

    1) is it possible to build the gate first without the electrical components and just add them over time? id like to surprise her with the gate first within the year then just add the other functions later on

    2) are you still active in the discord server? cause if i do start this i think i will need a lot of support from you or other builders as well 🙂

      Thanks for reaching out.
      1) Yes, you can print and paint the model only, and add the functionality later. You might need to support the chevrons (the Vs) somehow if the motor is excluded, or they will “fall” down.
      2) Yes, the discord server is active, with many contributing members.

    I have started printing the Stl’s and have a question.
    I am printing Base_2
    Do I also need to print all the files listed in Base ?

    1. Hi Stephen,
      No, you do not need to print the stone base parts themselves if you are going for the alternate base look. But there are some parts that are common between both bases. For instance the Stepper holder and Gear 32teeth object. Also the sockets that holds the gate.

  3. the power bord shows a resistor but you have none listed on the main page for building a stargate yourself i also could not find it in the pdf that was attached with your project could you let me know what ohm it is please

  5. been trying to get the pcb bords for cheverons and power but have not been able to get a responce from some of the supplyier links, is there a way to get a print model for pcb to spiciffly make them? if so i can check with local elctronis specialty store to see if i can get them made.

    1. Hi Rene,
      The gerber files for all the PCBs are included in the archive. You can use those files to order the PCBs made from a PCB supplier. I use jlcpcb.com myself.
      Also, you can check with the group in the Discord server. Sometimes people make more than they need and might be willing to sell some of theirs.

  6. Do you make them? How much does one cost? Just in pieces, I’ll put it together. and the circuit should be. I will solve the leds and the mirror. Thank you

  7. Hi Kristian, Any chance you can provide some pictures of how the DHD ground is supposed to be attached to the DHD platform (v1)?
    Its circular, has a groove for it, and looks like there are small holes for screws in the platform but no holes in the ground. I can glue it on but i’m just not sure how it was meant to be connected per the design.

    1. Hi Alex,
      I think I see what you mean. In some iterations of the project they were screwed together with the small screws. However, the final version does not have screws, and the idea is to just put it on top following the grooves. It shouldn’t slide off, but if you prefer to secure it more tightly you can use some glue.
